You Can Go On To Make More Of Them…

Imaginary City

And Then…

Make Cities Of The Imagination.

In one of my live event workshops, I teach people how to make imaginary cities using 3D graphics, drawing, 3D printing and other maker tools.

People love learning 3D graphics while at the same time making their own Cities Of The Imagination .

You don’t have to be a professional artist or designer.

In my last book ,  I showed you how you can make an imaginary city using the free 3D graphics software Blender.

My new book will be released over the next few weeks…

It  Is More Awesome!

This time, it will be about how to design an imaginary city and then make it in real life using maker technologies including 3D printing and laser cutting.

To make your own custom 3D models or 3D prints, you need to know how to work 3D modelling applications. However, don’t worry too much, It is easier than you think to start out…

It Is Easy To Model A Skyscraper In 3D!

Do you want to get more into making cool 3D models but you feel it is too complex, “techie”, time-consuming and ultimately often boring?

Here is a quick and fun exercise that will get you modelling simple skyscrapers from which you will be able to use in your 3D graphics projects or even more exciting, to print out on a 3D printer!

Taster Exercise

Today, I have a nice taster session for you. I am going to show you how you can make a building quickly and easily using 3D graphics. Then show you how easy it is to set up a 3D print. Just jump in now!

Also, see the screencast video below to show you exactly what to do…

1. Sketch out a skyscraper building that interests you do a Google image search to help you. In this case, I made a quick reference drawing of the really striking CN Tower in Toronto, Canada. I went to the top of this in early 2015. I definitely recommend doing that if you visit Toronto. Great views!

2. Open the 3D modelling software you use. I am using the free software Blender to create this skyscraper. The principles in other software is similar.

3. Check out the video below, following the simple 3D modelling processes I use.

4. When you have made your skyscraper, export the mesh as an .STL file.

5. Import the mesh into a 3D setup application such as Cura

6. Set up the model. Do a layer test and also add supports to make sure that the model will print properly.

7. Then print… watch this space to see the results soon!

Watch this video below to see the whole process…

What You Can Do Now…

1. Find a skyscraper that you like in Google or in real life. Choose a design that is fairly “linear” to start with. In other words, not a postmodernist Frank Gehry style building!

2. Make a simple sketch to get your head around the skyscraper design.

3. Start modelling in Blender or a 3D application you are familiar with.

4. Export it to Cura and make sure the print is set up with supports as I did when making my skyscraper.

5. Press print.

You should not only have made a 3D graphics version but also a 3D printed model. Amazing when you think about it.

Sign up to my newsletter below to get notification of the release of my new book too, will be released by the end of January 2016! This book will show you how to create cities of the imagination and make them in reality using maker tools such as 3D printing. Buy book/donate bitcoin.

Message, tweet or Email info@jamesabellart.com about what type of skyscraper you make. I will reshare it and also we can discuss it.

I will leave you with this inspirational quote. We are all capable of doing great things, but we need to plan on act on them as well as dream!
