Maker Faire

This is about the cities of the imagination Edinburgh Mini Maker Faire 2016 event. If you didn’t attend, I still want you to make your own imaginary city. I’m looking into putting this ever expanding map online.

In the next blog post, I will tell you how to upgrade your basic city sketch using 3D graphics, 3D printing etc to make something even Hollywood would be proud of! Read on!…

Start…

On Sunday the 10th of April, I got to the basement of Summerhall, Edinburgh, used to be the medical school. The Edinburgh Maker Faire was part of the yearly Edinburgh international Science Festival.

Summerhall, basement.

I ve hosted  cities of the imagination workshops in different locations around the World but this time, it was slightly different…

I was given space in the great Creative Hub site,  Summerhall for the 2016 Edinburgh Maker Faire. This time , I wanted the cities that you could create to link up on the same floor space.

From there, you can then upgrade your designs with my tuition or from elsewhere to develop their cities in 3D graphics, 3D prints and other Maker tools.

Other attendees, had stalls with interesting tech items, products to sell their own artworks…

I took a risk, not to sell a thing and to have hardly anything in the space, just some old card, pens, glue and an instruction poster but to make an activity.

Cities of the imagination Edinburgh is a taste of things to come… Check out my next blog post to find out how I upgraded the city I made here to a 3D computer graphics render.

Instructions…

Here are the instructions if you want to try a city yourself, this simple poster was displayed in the space . E mail me info@jamesabellart.com if you want a print size version of these instructions…

What Is The Aim Of This Imaginary City Activity?

1. You Design And Create Cities Of The Imagination just By Using Pens/Paper and Card, “the raw ingredients” for creativity.

2. I want you to use your city to learn and be part of the Make Learn Share Community online. If you are interested in making your own city, let me know and join in! I plan to put up a forum and a page dedicated to this on my website and at the same time, I want the cities to grow on a page on an interactive page on my website!

3. Another reason is that I love making cool stuff and I love to help you do the same!

Many people know about FabLabs and Makerspaces but they often lack a project idea. Designing an imaginary city, you can stretch your imaginations and go further, you may then want to reach out and learn 3D printing, laser cutting etc to upgrade your city and will give you lots of new ideas for future projects.

What Happened On The Day…

The first 30 minutes went by, no one showed up. I thought, uh oh!

Then, one person, then a few adults came to make one, after that, the taps turned on and the space soon had a large number of adults and kids at any one time.

I recorded the whole process and then took what happened on the floor to make the animation below. This made a fascinating growth pattern.

Now, the people who have made the cities have a de sign they can start with. They can evolve their design, use 3D printing, laser cutting etc. We live in great times and we can “Make Almost Anything”, due to the tools we can use at our local FabLabs or Makerspaces. You can do the same too!

The Recorded Evolutionary Sequence…

Here is the animation I made of how the cities evolved. When each person finished their city, the placed it on the ground wherever they wanted to.

Upgrade Your City

I made City number 01.

In the next blog post, I will show you how to use traditional art and 3D graphics to upgrade your city to make something great! You can also use 3D print, maker technology, etc.

You can upgrade your city in a number of ways –

  1. Make Learn And Share
  2. Check out Youtube Videos, for example on My Channel.
  3. Get a Skype Lesson or consultation with me, e mail me at info@jamesabellart.com

In the next blog post, I will take City number one (which was really just a rough doodle) and show you how this simple sketch can be turned into a great piece of 3D graphics art and possibly get 3D printed at a later date.

Create an imaginary city today, expand your creativity and learn new tools at the same time subscribe to my newsletter e mail me info@jamesabellart.com or just get started on it yourself, now!
