3Z Imaginary Arctic City – Work In Progress

Hello everyone, I’m really excited to show you this week some work in progress of a promotional image for my 3Z Imaginary City. I’m developing an image to get people interested in the 3Z City “legend” online and also as a real life high-quality print.  Welcome to this week’s blog 3Z Imaginary Arctic City  – Work In Progress…

The image is being made using 3D graphics and the aim is to start to create a legend “universe! around this city and all cities to come. You will see the final version in next week’s post. This will show you behind the scenes work and could give those of you who like to make things, ideas for your own work too.

I aim to make the final result “Hollywoodesque” and you will see this next week. For now, I have been laying down a rough composition with low resolution models with the image below. I’m evolving the composition again as we speak so check out for it or go to the link if you are looking at this after next weekend.

3Z Imaginary City Concept Art

Software and Other Tools I’m Using

Make Human great for base human figures for you to develop, pose and add clothes in 3ds Max, Blender etc

3ds Max (I’m using this for this one) or other software ie Blender

Sketchbook and pen for concept drawings

Camera for textures and other reference images

Photoshop or other image manipulator such as Gimp

Basic Idea

I wanted to make something that would promote my 3Z Arctic City model kit and add to the imaginary Cities Of The Imagination “universe” I am building.

First sketches…

I had thematic ideas of old and new, rich, poor, but how poor can even have a good time just chilling out, future as positive even in hard times.

As you can see from the initial sketch ideas, I wanted dwelling pods stacked in the foreground and people can be seen inside them in different poses, actions.

I had an idea that is would be a kind of “block party”. A run down block of flats, doing the best to enjoy themselves in hard times.

Much like today perhaps?

3Z Arctic City

At the same time, the 3Z floating city looms above in the sky, floating to colder climates.

As I evolved the scene, I decided that the floating city looked really great quite big and imposing and that will give viewers of the image a sense that it is a massive floating structure.

The pod “block party” idea is nice, for another time!

You can see in this very rough composition in the 3dsMax viewport, the building structures in the foreground were taking up a lot of the image and they were not adding much to the meaning and feel of the image in my opinion.

3Z Arctic City

I had the idea to just have one reclining figure looking up at the giant structure and cutting out most of the foreground “dwelling units”.

3Z Arctic City

I plan to cut even more out in the final composition that you will see next week. Details on the reclining figure will draw the viewer into the floating city structure. Lights will glint from the core of the sturcure, parts will glow and smoke will emerge from parts of it.

Like a giant behemoth. The final composition will probably look different to what it is now, watch this space…

For now I have been developing the reclining figure. As I mention in the video below, I want to figure to be a bit like those reclining poses in old Martini type adverts with a twist of restrofuturism.

While the one percent drift by in the massive floating city, this sole attractive female figure reclines on a run down concrete slab dwelling unit with a glass or wine, headphones and gazes at th giant structure.

For the female figure, I used the great free software application Make Human.

Make Human Import 3dsMax

You can edit the pose in 3ds Max or Blender if you export it correctly.
Make Human Clothes 3ds Max

I made the helmet shape here by selecting faces on the head of the model then copying them detaching them as one unit, then extruding the helmet. The radio headphones and ariel were easy, just using cylinders, extruding, scale and chamfer.

Make Human Import 3dsMax

The lone figure has shoes, a blanket and wine bottle and glass. All things that will make them more human looking and beleivable. Even in a futuristic world, people will have everyday objects.

Make Human 3dsmax Import

As you can see, I imported the figure into 3ds Max and modelled some clothes including the cap and headphones. See the video below for more information about this.

So there you go the image again so far, expect changes, expect effects, expect more cities of the imagination. Tune in next Sunday…
